Earth Day Mural Call for Entries

The theme of CEC’s 2021 Virtual Santa Barbara Earth Day Festival is Climate Leadership. The event celebrates key areas where climate leaders are stepping up to do the critical work needed to combat the climate crisis. We are proud of this new partnership, designed to showcase Climate Leadership through art, inspired by Amanda Gorman, the National Youth Poet Laureate, and her poem Earthrise.

After a turbulent and socially distant year, CEC aims to connect deeper with the vibrant community of artists in our region. This event offers an important opportunity to bring the climate crisis to an even wider audience – through the medium of art. In that spirit, CEC has partnered up with the Wildling Museum for an Earth Day themed poetry contest and Santa Barbara Channelkeeper’s annual "What the Channel Means to Me” student art contest – open to high school students in the county.

If you’re a Santa Barbara County artist, we invite you to submit a proposal for a mural that expresses what Earth Day and Climate Leadership mean to you.

One concept will be selected to appear on the Paseo Nuevo Arts Terrace Parking Deck, which is on the exterior wall of the Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara.

The selected artist, or artist group, will receive a stipend and a materials budget to paint their mural between April 19-23, 2021. The completed mural will be revealed on the final day of the Santa Barbara Earth Day Festival, April 24!

The Earth Day Mural Call For Entries is hosted in partnership by Community Environmental Council (CEC), The Arts Fund, Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara, Paseo Nuevo, and Santa Barbara BCycle.
