SANTA BARBARA, Calif (October 19, 2023) – The Community Environmental Council (CEC)  is excited to announce its upcoming Youth Climate Workshop, on Saturday, October 28 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at its new Environmental Hub in downtown Santa Barbara. Registration is now open for this free event, designed to empower the next generation of climate leaders with the skills and tools they need to take immediate and effective climate action. Geared toward high school students across the Central Coast, the Youth Climate Workshop will bring together passionate young individuals who are eager to make a positive impact on our planet's future.

“Nurturing the environmental leaders of tomorrow is a critical part of CEC's commitment to a sustainable future,” said Sigrid Wright, CEO of CEC. “This is an opportunity for high schoolers to gather with climate experts, to discuss and learn about climate anxiety, policy advocacy, everyday earth-friendly actions, and how to communicate about climate change with their friends, family, neighbors, and teachers”

Led by CEC staff members Kathi King, Rosheil Ramirez, and Farah Stack, alongside environmental consultant Ilan Macadam-Somer, and educators Velia Soto and Jessica Prichard, participants will gain valuable insights and knowledge on critical climate-related topics. Key workshop topics include climate anxiety education, climate communication skills, climate policy advocacy tools and consumer habit changes for the planet.

In addition to making connections with other local youth who care about climate change, students will receive an official certificate of completion and community service hours for participating in the workshop.

CEC’s Youth Climate Workshop is free to attend, and includes snacks and lunch. To register for the Youth Climate Workshop and access full event details, please visit the CEC website at cecsb.org/events/youth-climate-workshops

This first-of-its-kind pilot for youth is an adaptation of CEC’s Climate Stewards Certification Program, which cultivates and trains a committed corps of volunteers to play an active role in their community to address and alleviate climate impacts. Outcomes from this workshop will inform how CEC moves forward with its larger youth initiative in 2024.
