and keep climate solutions advancing on the Central Coast.

We’ve been here before.

In 1969, a devastating oil spill exposed the risks of our dependence on fossil fuels — and led to the creation of the Community Environmental Council.

Today, we face renewed threats.

Across the country, efforts are underway to lock in fossil fuels for decades to come — threatening to undo years of hard-won progress.

We refuse to go back.

Here’s how we’re responding:

  • Advancing regional policy to reduce fossil fuel dependence

  • Expanding resilience hubs that protect communities during wildfires and extreme heat

  • Training local leaders to take action through our Climate Stewards program

This is what it looks like to meet this moment.

Lauren Leland joined CEC’s Climate Stewards program to turn concern into action. As part of her project, she helped bring the nationwide Make Polluters Pay campaign to Santa Barbara County — organizing students and the public to hold fossil fuel companies accountable.

Today, she is part of a growing network of more than 225 Climate Stewards alumni leading change across our region.

Together, we’re building a future beyond fossil fuels.

“When we come together and raise our voices,

accountability follows.”

— Lauren Leland
