7 Reasons to Have Hope for the Climate

This week, the Community Environmental Council released its 2021 Impact Report, providing optimism in the face of the drumbeat of doom and gloom around our changing climate.

Included in the report are 7 reasons (among many) why we should all have hope for the future:

  1. 1.4 million residents in 22 cities and counties in Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties are now on a solid path toward 100% renewable electricity as a result of CEC's advocacy.

  2. Critical laws and policies are driving action toward zero carbon emissions, a circular economy, and a just transition away from fossil fuels.

  3. Electric vehicle use is increasing, backed by strong statewide targets, more charging stations, and increased adoption by a new audience: moderate-to-low income drivers.

  4. Community leaders are working together to design innovative community-led solutions that build resilience to wildfire, extreme heat, and other climate threats.

  5. Farms, ranches, and orchards are piloting climate-smart agriculture practices that draw down excess carbon and can be replicated elsewhere.

  6. Over 50,000 people took personal action through CEC last year – prompting them to vote, ditch plastic, install green technologies, and advocate for renewable/clean energy in workplaces, schools, and homes.

  7. Over 170 diverse organizations and agencies across a wide range of sectors are partnering with CEC to implement creative, equitable solutions to the climate crisis.

And that is just the start of the progress outlined in our 2021 Impact Report. We hope you will read it, share it, and commit to deeper action that helps drive us toward a carbon neutral future.
