Cody Howen, Community Member
I’m a community member, and I’m a CEC Climate Steward.
Kyla Murphy designed and distributed educational posters across the harbors of Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Oxnard, promoting safe and eco-friendly boat waste disposal practices.
“I believe I am a better community member of Santa Barbara after taking the Climate Stewards course,” said Cody. “I’m more willing to advocate and speak up for the climate and climate justice.”
About Cody
Climate Steward alum Cody Howen took the course to deepen his understanding of the climate crisis personally, professionally, and as a community member in Santa Barbara. As the owner of Sunrise 805, a solar and energy storage company, Cody regularly discusses renewable energy, resilience, and utility costs with homeowners, and found the course invaluable for navigating those conversations with more confidence and context.
“At the beginning of 2025, I was alarmed at the rapidly changing policy landscape and wanted to be more informed and equipped for difficult conversations,” he shared. Cody teamed up with fellow cohort member Miranda Magaña for their Stewardship Project to host an in-person environmental justice panel at the CEC Environmental Hub.
The community event spotlighted the unique “guerilla gardening” efforts of MiniNature Reserve in Oxnard — a grassroots initiative transforming overlooked spaces into thriving native habitats. The idea was inspired by the cohort’s volunteer day removing invasive ice plant near a freeway onramp, an experience that helped Cody recognize the power of collective action and community-led land stewardship.
